About Kevin Griffiths
It was 1978 when I broke my neck in a diving accident. I dove into a Para pool and misjudged the side as I swum along the bottom and hit my head - since then I have been confined to a wheelchair as a Quadriplegic - I was 13 years old.
Still being young I went back to complete High School at Mt Roskill Grammar in Auckland, with one of my favourite subjects being Art. Whilst at school, I obtained my drivers license and became interested in CB and Ham Radios. Afterwards I spent the rest of my youth being a typical teenager, and then went on to compete in various wheelchair sports and travelled extensively overseas.
In 1991 I decided to have a go at painting with my mouth. I was awarded a Scholarship with the Association of Mouth & Foot Painting Artists as a Student Member the following year. Since then I have been sending the originals of my paintings to the Head Office in Liechtenstein for consideration for them to be reproduced into either greetings cards, gift paper, bookmarks or even jigsaws.
In 2001 I became an Associate Member of the Mouth & Foot Painting Artists Association. Many of the paintings below have been reproduced not only here in New Zealand but all over the world, and I have won several art awards when my paintings have been exhibited at national and international competitions.
Landscapes with lots of colour and texture make up the bulk of my work, and although I prefer to paint with acrylics, I have been known to use oils and water colours from time to time. My inspiration comes from our beautiful countryside, with so much on offer there will never be a shortage of images for me to capture. Currently I am living in Ahipara, where I am able to enjoy lots of fishing, off road racing and living the life on 90 Mile Beach...
